In Home Maternity Session

Some moments in life feel extra special to capture, and this was one of them. I had the honor of photographing Alexis, someone I’ve known since high school, as she and her partner prepare to welcome their long-awaited baby boy. Their journey to this moment hasn’t been easy—after struggling with infertility, this pregnancy is a dream come true.

For their maternity session, we chose the most meaningful location: home. There’s something so intimate and beautiful about an in-home maternity photoshoot—the soft morning light, the quiet anticipation, the little baby items waiting to be used. This session was full of love, warmth, and so many emotions, and I can’t wait to share it with you. It was also important to momma that we got outside in the snow, unfortunately for us the area we wanted to go into was a giant, thick sheet of ice. But! Mom and dad had the best attitude the entire time and we were still able to get those beautifully snowy woods pictures.  The entire session was so special, and so beautiful to me I loved it from beginning to end.

The Mom & Dad To Be

From the moment I walked into their home, I could feel the love and excitement in the air. This sweet couple are the kind of couple that instantly makes you feel at home—kind, down-to-earth, and so deeply in love. This little baby boy is already so cherished, and you can see it in every glance, every touch, and every quiet moment they shared during the session. Dad-to-be was so incredibly loving and attentive to momma, and his small glances, and touches were honestly the sweetest thing. He so clearly loves his woman and baby so much.

While their journey to parenthood hasn’t been the easiest, this chapter is filled with so much joy and gratitude. Seeing them soak in this season of anticipation was truly beautiful to capture and I am so humbled and thankful to have had the opportunity to bear witness to their love and story.  (I also get to meet their sweet boy in a few weeks and I’m literally exploding over it)

Theres No Place Like Home

One of my favorite moments from this session was when I handed Dad my Instax camera and let him take a few photos of Mom. There’s something so beautiful about capturing a moment from a loved one’s perspective—no posing, no pressure, just pure emotion. Seeing his excitement as the film developed, knowing they’d have these tangible little keepsakes to tuck away in the baby book, made it even more special.

In-home maternity sessions already feel intimate and personal, but adding little touches like this—instant film, cozy home details, and real-life interactions—makes them even more meaningful. It’s not just about taking photos; it’s about preserving memories in a way that feels real and timeless

I also do have to make a note that their teeniest pup, Luna and her side eyes brought new life into me. I seriously, really love a sassy pupper.

The outfits

Alexis and I collabed on a pinterest board which I LOVED.  I was able to get a vibe for what she was looking for and we were able to go back and forth until we found something that worked.

For outdoor, she went with a beautifully blue and beautifully textured dress. Dad was wearing a soft brown, chunky sweater that complimented her dress so well. I’m a sucker for textures and I just loved these colors for this shoot.

Inside, she decided she wanted to go for a cozy vibe.  I loved this because it was home, they were cozy and in love.  What more could an expecting momma at the tail end of a long awaited pregnancy want? So, she wore a simple robe with a bra and shorts and it was simple and wonderful. We got to see that sweet little baby bump the whole time (dad took full advantage of all the belly rubs). The perfect outfit doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg, and it doesn’t need to be anything new or fancy.

Maternity Session Tips

Thinking about doing an in-home maternity session? Here are some easy tips to make the most of your experience and create beautiful, natural photos!"

1. Prep Your Space, But Don’t Stress It!
You do not need a “picture-perfect, pinterest ready” home—just a few cozy, clutter-free spots with good natural light. Bedrooms, living rooms, and nurseries are great options!

2. Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
Soft, flowy fabrics, neutral or earthy tones, and comfortable pieces that highlight the baby bump always photograph beautifully.

3. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera
The best moments happen naturally—snuggling on the couch, laughing together, or resting a hand on the bump. Don’t worry about posing too much!

4. Add Personal Touches
Meaningful items like ultrasound photos, baby books, or even instant film (like we did in this session!) can make your photos extra special.

5. Plan for the Best Light
Soft morning or late afternoon light coming through the windows creates the dreamiest glow—perfect for an intimate, cozy feel.

6. Embrace the Comfort of Home
The best part about an in-home session? You get to document this chapter in the place where so many beautiful memories will be made once your little one arrives.

Capturing this season of anticipation for Alexis and Dorian was such a beautiful reminder of how powerful in-home maternity sessions can be. There’s something so special about photographing these moments in the space where so much love already exists—and where even more memories will soon be made.

If you’re expecting and considering a maternity session, I’d love to help you document this incredible chapter in a way that feels authentic, intimate, and completely you. Whether it’s a cozy in-home session or an outdoor adventure, let’s create something beautiful together!
